My family lost a very special person a few weeks ago; she was a daughter, a spouse, an aunt, a sister and a friend.
The amazing human being I speak of is my step-sister Kris.
Even though, we fought like cats and dogs growing up and she didn’t always understand my craziness , and I never quite understood why she read so many books, we had a mutual respect for one another.
Through the years, I would be dash into town stopping at Brandon Drive quickly before heading to the next social stop; she would be sitting quietly reading, having a conversation with Dad or puzzling with her mother. We would hug and chat; have a quick catch up and bid farewell until the next time.
I was busy with my life and she was busy with her life, but she never missed the chance to send a handwritten note for my birthday, and I can’t remember a Christmas that I didn’t receive a Christmas card with an inspiring message written inside. We exchanged quick texts to catch up. I guess, I always thought there would be more time.
It was her logic, dedication to growth, thinking out of the box and commitment to everything that allowed her to walk through this crazy world impacting so many.
She was a woman who lived her life with the fierce abandon to make a difference in every person she touched. She wasn’t flashy or loud, and she certainly didn’t need compliments or praise.
Her life wasn’t easy, but she met every challenge with dignity, grace and perseverance until the end. She understood her path and how she fit into the life that was given to her.
She filled her life with books, family, friends, cats and experiences with the ones she loved – she picked her people well!
We all experience loss, and each and every one of us are entitled to grieve in our own way.
Grieve easy, grieve hard; do it on your own terms, but please don’t get so lost in the sadness that you can’t remember that with every loss, there was a life extremely well lived!
